Crop and livestock insurance is a financial safety net that can protect your farm or ranch business against crop and livestock losses, paying out money to help stabilize income in the event of a loss.

This is an approximately 2-hour self-paced course that will help you strategize crop and livestock insurance coverage that addresses the unique goals of your farm or ranch business with regards to your financial goals and risk tolerance.

Course objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will:

  • Understand your crop and/or livestock loss related concerns in relation to your business goals
  • Identify whether you are eligible for Whole Farm Revenue Protection (including the Micro Farm option) and decide whether it is worth the obligations/price for the value offered.
  • Be ready to contact a crop/livestock insurance agent for a discussion of your options.

This course includes 5 lessons featuring illuminating video presentations, insightful readings, reflective quizzes, and action-planning exercises. Here’s an overview of the lessons you’ll work through:

Lesson 1: Getting Started

  • Get familiar with the value and utility of crop and livestock insurance.
  • Rate Your Risk – In this reflection exercise, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your own farm or ranch operation and identify your areas of risk and concern.

Lesson 2: How Crop and Livestock Insurance Works

  • Get familiar with the basics of crop and livestock insurance.
  • How does coverage work? In this video, you will gain insights into how crop and livestock coverage works by reviewing two common crop and livestock insurance policies and exploring a practical example.

Lesson 3: Understanding Whole Farm Revenue Protection (WFRP)

  • What is WFRP? – Learn how WFRP coverage works for diversified farms and ranches.
  • If I lose revenue because of diseased or damaged crops/livestock, how can WFRP help me? – In this video, you will see how WFRP functions in the event of a loss through practical farmer scenarios.
  • What revenue from my farm or ranch operation can be insured under WFRP? – Explore what WFRP classifies as “allowable revenue” and touch on the basics of the Micro Farm policy.
  • Reflecting on your income streams – This activity is an opportunity to reflect on your revenue streams and identify which ones feel important to insure.

Lesson 4: Understanding Perils

  • Discover why understanding perils is important for your farm or ranch.
  • What perils are insured under WFRP? – Get familiar with common perils that are and are not insured under WFRP.
  • What perils are you facing? – Make a list of what perils your operation may face and identify your top five concerns.

Lesson 5: Understanding Your Eligibility

  • Explore the eligibility requirements for WFRP and Micro Farm.
  • What does it take to get WFRP?- In this activity, begin taking steps to plan for and secure WFRP for your farm or ranch operation.

This course is suitable for farmers and ranchers with any business experience. However, those with at least one year of experience who are able to conduct an assessment of their business and work through tangible assignments to improve current risk management systems will benefit most from this course.
