Apply for our Legal Education Associate position!

Please consider applying to become our newest staff member this fall.

Farm Commons is eager to welcome a Legal Education Associate to our team! Farm Commons is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers farmers and ranchers to create solutions to their business law needs, within a community of support. Our highly innovative team members wake up each day ready to redefine how sustainable farm businesses manage their legal obligations. We are proud of our sought-after expertise, excellent resources, strong reputation, and authentic success in reducing legal risk for sustainable farmers nationwide. We are ready to add a Legal Education Associate to help us create useful new materials for producers nationwide.

Please consider joining us in this powerful opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of farmers and ranchers nationwide. Working together, we can create incredibly useful educational materials, templates, resources, and workshops that help agricultural producers manage their legal risks.

We are looking for a person who can translate legal logistics into straightforward action points and can identify the key resources an entrepreneur will need to implement that action step. A successful Legal Education Associate will be able to successfully handle all aspects of resource production, including conceptual design, drafting, and editing, all in collaboration with colleagues, advisors, and farmers/ranchers themselves.

We are looking for a person with keen insight into what it means to empower people with legal tools. Fundamentally, we are looking for an educator. That being said, a successful candidate will likely have a J.D. degree and may have practiced law as necessary to gain skills in legal research and analysis which are foundational to the educational process. But, there are other ways for successful candidates to develop legal knowledge and insight, and we are eager to hear from applicants with a wide range of relevant experiences.

To assist candidates in assessing if this opportunity is right for their career path, we have assembled the following bullet points.

If successful, the Legal Education Associate will achieve the following:

  • Demonstration of keen insight into how to enable sound business decision-making; demonstrated ability to guide entrepreneurs through business decision-making;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to clearly present complex content through many forms of media (written, video recording, etc.) and in person;
  • A Juris Doctor degree or admission to practice law in any state in the United States is preferred however a paralegal degree or other sufficient experience in legal research and writing will also be considered;
  • Production of legal research, analysis, and writing, including maintenance of clear, verifiable documentation;
  • Experience writing straightforward legal education materials for non-attorney audiences;
  • Experience or educational background in agriculture, farming, food systems and/or business sustainability;
  • Proven ability to take initiative in developing programs that are goal-focused and results-oriented with limited oversight;
  • Ability to see past “what is” and towards “what could be”;
  • Candidates with Spanish language fluency will receive priority consideration, but it is not a requirement. The Legal Education Associate requires communication with colleagues, partners, and members of the community in English.

To achieve the above goals, the Legal Education Associate will engage in the following work:

  • Work within a team to identify practical, action-oriented, feasible steps that enable farmers and ranchers (as well as their professional support teams) to reduce legal risk and leverage legal opportunity.
  • Identify and create materials that support the implementation of the above-identified action steps (such as models, checklists, forms, and logs).
  • Design and conduct processes for gathering stakeholder input into materials/deliverables, including gathering input from partners, and farmer/rancher participants. Incorporate feedback into final resources.
  • Assist in production of resources, to include design, editing, and website publication.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis as necessary to develop needed resources, in coordination with our Staff Attorney and with our volunteer program manager.
  • Get resources into the hands of farmers, ranchers, and their support professionals nationwide by coordinating with our Communications Manager and Farmer Development Manager about curricular integration and distribution.
  • Assist the Executive and Associate Directors with project reporting, documentation, evaluation

We believe possession of the following will position the successful candidate for success as our Legal Education Associate:

Workplace Hours and Facilities

The successful candidate must have consistent and high-speed access to the internet at their work location. The successful candidate may work from any location that permits the successful achievement of the position objectives to include regular appearances on camera and recording audio visual material without distraction. Availability during standard business hours within a time zone of the continental United States is required. That being said, successful candidates are not required to be available for every business hour within their time zone; work schedules that include evening/weekend work are allowed, subject to approval.

Workplace Culture

Successful candidates must be able to thrive in a very small organization that is entirely remote. This means there is often little concrete direction provided aside from a clear goal and suggested avenues to meet it. Each team member needs to operate with little oversight while initiating coordination and collaboration, without hesitation. We cultivate an emotionally intelligent environment where colleagues are supported in understanding and conveying their needs.

Flexibility is an essential component of working in a small and highly innovative organization. Farm Commons does things most legally trained folks have never imagined before. We, as a team, manifest the unimaginable. Although it may not look like it at first, this is a highly creative position. As is common in creative and innovative ventures, things rarely go as planned. We depend on each team member being able to see the big picture, communicate about progress towards it, express needs and issues, and adapt quickly as visions evolve into reality. Our work is a journey to a destination that takes shape only as we move towards it. This type of workplace doesn’t necessarily work for many folks accustomed to a traditional legal environment.

The Legal Education Associate receives the following regarding salary, benefits, and compensation:

  • An annual salary of $57,000 (standard 40 hour workweek). This position is exempt from overtime;
  • 10 vacation days, 5 sick days, and 8 paid holidays per year, plus a week off between Christmas and New Years. Full time employees may also take paid time off in the amount of 4 hours per week between Memorial Day and Labor Day;

  • Stipend for technology upgrades and office furniture;
  • Reimbursement of $40 per month for internet services.
